    Chocolate Chip Oat Slice

My kids are obsessed with the chocolate chip oat bars from the supermarket, but with 4 kids, a packet of 6 doesn’t last very long in our house. I thought I would play around with a recipe and bake my own. I wasn’t sure if my kids would approve because they are super fussy and a little savage when it comes to my homemade baking, but I can officially report that this chocolate chip oat slice is KID APPROVED x 4!

Kid approved means it’s perfect for the lunchbox or as a snack. I’m always looking for lunchbox snacks for my children, so now I have another recipe that I can bake ahead of time, freeze and pack in their lunchboxes.

Tips when baking the chocolate chip oat slice

    • This slice can be frozen in an airtight container for up to 3 months which makes it perfect to bake ahead of time and freeze for the lunchbox.
    • You can add anything you like to the slice. If you would prefer to keep out the chocolate, you could add some dried fruit or desiccated coconut for some extra flavour.
    • The slice will be a little soft when you first take it out of the oven, but as it cools, the slice will harden.
    • I cut mine into bar shapes, but you could cut them into squares or any size that is perfect for your kid’s lunchbox.
    • I baked the slice in a lamington sized tray, but you could bake it any size tray you like. The thickness of the bars will just differ depending on your tray size.

What ingredients do I need to make this chocolate chip oat slice?

    • Rolled oats (I used the Woolworths branded oats)
    • Butter (this recipe is best made using the real block butter and not margarine)
    • Chocolate baking chips
    • Brown sugar
    • Eggs
    • Self-raising flour
    • Baking tray (I used a lamington sized tray)
    • Baking paper to line the baking tray

Super easy to follow and delicious!
We added some drizzled melted chocolate on top after cutting into bars and the kids LOVE it! Delicious. Will definitely be making this again with some other different flavour variations!

Great recipe. My daughters love it and are looking forward to having it in their school lunch box. I substituted the butter for coconut oil and it works a treat.

I did not let mine cool enough before transferring it out of the pan. It cracked. Should have known better but I was excited to try it. Will know for next batch. This was really to see if the kids liked it, which they did. So thank you for the recipe, it’s a keeper!

Kids loved it. I didn’t have enough sugar but the half cup I used was plenty. I also didn’t have choc chips so I just cut up a bar of chocolate. Baked it in a loaf pan so the bars had some height which worked well. Will definitely be making this again.

Made this recipe for the first time today and usually if one child likes something it’ll mean the other child doesn’t BUT it was enjoyed by all which is awesome!! Will definitely make again. Thank you for sharing.
